Reclaiming Our Education
What We Offer
At LCVI, we offer one on one tutoring, workshops, writing circles and more. For individual tutoriting, each adult First Nation, Inuit and Metis learner is assessed and matched with a trained volunteer tutor. These pairs meet for up to 3 hours each week to work on an individualized program designed around their needs in reading, writing, math, budgeting skills and computer skills. We could provide assistance at a dedicated community centre location on reserve in Stz’uminus, Snuneymuxw, and Snaw-naw-as First Nations, at VIU and Tillicum Lelum or at our main office downtown at 19 Commercial St. above “Well Read Books.”. We provide assistance to those students enrolled in VIU and at Tillicum Lelum.

It's A Good Day to be Indigenous
Celebrate culture with us every second Sunday at LCVI located at 19 Commercial Street for community led projects and discussions about indigenous culture. A safe place to connect, reconnect, teach or learn a craft and discuss Indigenous literature, music & arts. We bead, knit, create and gather! Allies are encouraged to attend!
Indigenous & Allies writing circle: also available on zoom
Write or connect with emerging writers, learn of writing contests and how to apply. Explore publishing as well.
No experience necessary and everyone is welcome to attend.
Details of the writing circle will be updated soon.
Feathers
Supporting Survivors Reclaim Education
The program was developed in collaboration with Linda Jack of Eagle Feathers Literacy and is inspired by her advocacy. It was oriented towards Indigenous learners by incorporating Indigenous approaches to learning, however open to any adult learner who would like to benefit from group learning.
Special attention will be given to creating an environment that not only facilitates learning but that is safe, welcoming, and respectful of the learners who risk showing up. We envision an adult literacy program that feels more like sitting around the kitchen table working on our projects together, than a formal classroom.
Central to our program development was creating a learning environment that facilitates individual learner goals with tutors on hand to assist. Learning outcomes must be driven by individual learner and group identified goals rather than those prescribed by an instructor in more institutional settings. Learners can begin at their own level and work according to their own pace. In short, our approach will be de-institutionalized and decolonized. This is program is now complete and was funded by the Peter Gzowski Foundation for Literacy.
