Literacy is Our Legacy
We gratefully acknowledge the traditional territories of the Snuneymuxw, Stz’uminus and
Snaw-Naw-As Nations, as well as the home of the Mid-Island Métis Nation.
We are Literacy Central Vancouver Island
Together, with over 150 highly passionate and dedicated volunteers, LCVI provides literacy services to youth, families and adults from all walks of life and all backgrounds.
Learning should be accessible to everyone.
We take pride in providing tutoring services free of charge to the community in Central Vancouver Island.
Our Dedicated Volunteers
Our 100 volunteers are the heartbeat of our organization. We would not be able to offer our free and accessible literacy services to the community without their support. We are forever grateful for each and every volunteer who has offered their time and commitment to LCVI.

Our Values
Low literacy skills are directly linked to poverty, poor health, and high unemployment. LCVI’s network of volunteers provides excellent and effective programming to improve literacy in communities from Parksville to the Chemanius. We value mutual respect and collaboration in all our relationships.
In order to achieve our mission, we are committed to finding and using innovative ways to reach the people who need us most. Our literacy activities, programs, and services are inclusive of any individual for whom our assistance is welcome and needed.
Philosophy of Learning
LCVI believes everyone has the right to learn. We believe:
- Everyone is capable of learning new things
- We go where people are, rather than expecting them to come to us
- Every place is a learning place
- We value a tutorial partnership where the learner and tutor respect and learn from each other
- We value the contributions learners, volunteers, and partners make in the learning experience
Our Funders
Thank you for your continual support
We thank Decoda Literacy Solutions and gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and the Ministry of Advanced Education as well as BC Gaming, City of Nanaimo, United Way and Rotary Clubs of Nanaimo and Lantzville.
We are grateful to the individual funders in our community that continue to support our programs as well. Without the donations from our community and customers of our bookstore, Well Read Books, we would not be able to provide FREE literacy services to people.
